We've explored the Covesea Caves in all seasons & recorded herald moths hibernating inside during winter & spring. They're beautiful & well camouflaged! If you explore caves, be conscious of potential moth friends & record them. 🦋 podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/sto… The British Nature Guide

We mix history & environmental science. Covesea was perfect. "Covesea Caves are an amazing place to think about time, the massive geologic timescales of millennia it takes to build cliffs, or the timescales of human history we see written on the walls." podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/sto…

We explore heritage, but also try to think about the modern relevance to the places we visit. Covesea was a great place to think about deep time. We talk a lot about the metaphorical & literal marks that humanity makes on nature. open.spotify.com/episode/0D8pmm…

Tomorrow we release the 2nd part of the splendid Covesea episodes, it's @AnnieGfn favourite we've done so far. For people interested in The Covesea Caves Project, we'll go into the more recent history & it's magical. Here's us climbing into a mini cave at the back of a medium cave:

"The best stories are like the flight of the fulmar. Once you’ve slowed down and listened to the old tales, or sat and watched fulmars fly, it feels as though the boundaries between time and space can be a little bit blended." (Just look at that wee face!) open.spotify.com/show/3Jdlm4HZB…

Here’s the entire deposit from a pit we uncovered from Covesea Cave 2 - you can see the sort of diversity of species I’m dealing with just in this small sample!

There’s also an amazing amount of preservation in these caves - in this photo, we have an articulated “leg” of the now-extinct Great Auk, which is still held together by preserved bits of soft tissue!

Curling irons and straighteners may be relatively modern inventions, but people have been styling their tresses for thousands of years 💇 Beautiful combs and accessories have been found across #Scotland, including these Bronze Age hair rings from Moray: bit.ly/ArchaeoHair
