A problem of James Tanton that I found completely mindblowing when I saw it (years ago now!) was to describe the "squine" curve mathematically. And there it is, in the middle image below. So... can you figure out how to write that function using standard math/trig functions?

Sophie Germain (1776 - 1831) was a French mathematician, physicist, and philosopher. In mathematics, she excelled at number theory. Prime numbers p such that 2p + 1 is also prime are called Sophie Germain primes in her honor. Germain was born on this day in 1776. #sharingiscaring

Things that Schools should teach: โ€ข Being wrong is not a bad thing. โ€ข It's Okay to question what you have been taught. โ€ข Grades aren't as valuable as skills. โ€ข Understanding is more important than memorization. โ€ข Making mistakes is Okay. Learn from your mistakes.

Y8 are still struggling with compound area, especially with subtraction. Today I made them write a plan without numbers before they were allowed to do any calculations. It worked pretty well - I need to do this sort of thing more often.

Intelligence isn't the ability to remember and repeat, like they teach you in school. It is the ability to learn from experience, solve problems, and use our knowledge to adapt to new situations.
