Famine has been formally declared today in the Gaza Governorate. It’s only the 5th time the IPC has declared a famine since its formation in 2004. Previous famines declared were in: —Somalia 2011 —South Sudan 2017 & 2020 —Sudan 2024

Starvation in Gaza has been building for months. The Famine Review Committee conclusion on famine is compelling (more on that below). Principal responsibility lies with Israeli aid obstruction - but failure of US & Europe to use *any* real leverage on this is also stunning. 🧵
