Good news/bad news: This cold spell is wreaking havoc on egg masses of the invasive gypsy moth... unless they are insulated under the snow pack. "Cool" new work from our group last week in Journal of Biogeography onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jb…

Bring on the #coldsnap! Overwintering #gypsymoth mortality occurs at -27F, and #EAB mortality from -20 to -30F. Remember, actual temps, not windchill.

In the cold winter of 2013-14, #EAB experienced pockets of 60% mortality in the #TwinCities that set populations back nicely. #PolarVortex2019 has been colder, but still won’t eradicate #EAB.

As we emerge from #PolarVortex2019 let us remember the brave insect biological control agents that perished with #EAB. After lessons of cold winter 2013-14, Minnesota efforts funded by MN ENRTF have since focused on a hardier biocontrol species.

Our PhD student Dora Mwangola headlines today's grad student feature from UMN Entomology Dept ! Dora's urban forestry work against #EAB partners with several cities across MN and is supported by @UMNMITPPC

Surprise guest cicada at kids camp tonight. Impromptu experiment from youth camper concerned about hunger: can it eat goldfish crackers?
