#OTD in 1865 Major General Jacob D. Cox established his division's encampment two miles north of Fort Fisher in preparation for the impending assault on Fort Anderson.

Brunswick Town "founder" Maurice Moore's participation in the #Tuscarora War led him through the lower Cape Fear region where he discovered the abundant long leaf pine forest and became determined to create a permanent English settlement there.

#OTD in 1865, General Scholfield of the Union forces in the Cape Fear ordered a last reconnaissance mission on Fort Anderson. Acting on orders, Lt. Col. Albert Barney led 300 men of the 142nd NY Infantry north. Confederate calvary prevented them from getting close to the fort.

We have seen a few of these little guys on site in the last couple of years! A treat for our birdwatching visitors.

#OTD, 1865, General John Schofield's plan for attacking Fort Anderson was issued as Special Orders #7. It gave General Cox full authority to decide, after reconnaissance, whether to attack the fort or not. If not, it laid plans to flank around Orton pond.
