70 years ago today, Chief Justice Fred Vinson died of a heart attack at the age of 63.

Justice Frankfurter (who, for lots of reasons, was no fan of Vinson’s) told two of his clerks that “this is the first solid piece of evidence I’ve ever had that there really is a God.”
