“In Indian cinema you are not supposed to show kissing or close embraces or intimate love scenes, nothing of that sort, particularly not in 1958. But I wanted something that would suggest intimacy, the tenderness of married life, what it does to an erstwhile bachelor...(1)

The results are in and it’s proven that regulating traffic so kids in your city can breathe clean air, and calling for a ceasefire so kids in Gaza can keep breathing, are not only ethical policies but vote winners.

Anyway today I am thinking of this. When Sinead O’Connor was asked to perform on a TV chat show & surprised everyone by changing her planned hit song, dropping the musical accompaniment, & singing a hymn. This hymn. The audience wept. I do too, each time.

Love this from Ben Phillips Our futures & fates are intertwined. Global public goods are just that, good for us all, as a collective & our humanity.

Is empathy the future?

We do not know. We cannot know.

But we do know this: if we let go of empathy, there is no future.

The global anti-rights agenda has its heart a psyche of going on the lookout for people to hurt.

The lesson of public health, in contrast, is that hurting anyone hurts everyone. The lesson of ethics is the same. Empathy, acceptance, is where what is wise, & what is right, meet.

Not long ago, *most* countries criminalised people for being gay.

Now, over two thirds of countries do not criminalise people for being gay.

Each time another country decriminalises, more people are set free from fear, and momentum towards global decriminalisation picks up pace towards unstoppability.

Tonight, in one fewer country, will people spend the night in fear of arrest for who they they love or who they are.

In Dominica, in a court case brought by Dominicans, Dominican judges in Dominica’s Court have ruled that Dominica’s Constitution protects Dominicans rights against the harmful and hateful British colonial legacy anti-gay law.
