20 years ago Thursday. Cooperstown. Hotel patio. Late into Sunday night. Beers, cigars, stories, laughs. Reliving the day, speech, message in great detail. With affirmation from fellow HOFers, he called it one of great days of his life. You can rest now, old friend. #RIP #Ryno

July 30, 2005. Cooperstown. Private party day before induction. They came from around the world to pay tribute. Some quite famous, some at great expense and difficulty. He was shocked by the outpouring. So many endearing qualities. Among the finest was his humility. #RIP #Ryno

A three-sport legend and a physically-gifted athlete, it’s assumed baseball was easy for him. Not even a little. “Every day I was afraid of being embarrassed. So I worked. If you work hard and prepare hard, you have nothing to fear.” No one ever did that part better. #RIP #Ryno

He was at once wise and childlike, with a love to giggle and instigate. Did not suffer fools or volunteer opinions. Did not believe anything in life was or should come easy, but that all the best was worth fighting for, especially life itself. He deserved better. #RIP #Ryno

Book signing ⁦NIU⁩ Sept 95. Took him to the Pike House where I lived 10 years earlier. Still stunk of puke and stale beer. He was unimpressed. “Rookie ball I lived in a garage in Helena, Montana. You got mice. I had rats. This is a palace compared to that.” #RIP #Ryno

Pete Rose on #Ryno: “He had talent. A lot of guys in this game have talent and go nowhere. What it came down to was he outworked everyone. It’s the most overlooked part of the game. You HAVE to put in the work or that talent means nothing — at least for most of us.” #RIP

This will certainly come as a shock, but I don’t have many friends. When you lose one that goes back 35 years it hits hard. He was decent, dignified and dedicated. “Respect” was a way of life. He adored his family above all, but he loved you #cubs fans. I hope you know that. #RIP

Cooperstown 20 years ago today. Sorta me and Tom Seaver, after Seaver stumbled into Ryno. When I inquired as to how the greatest fielding 2B of all time, with such pure hands, could drop and break a small camera, Ryno simply put his palms to the air, grinned and said, “E-1.”
