See below for me slowly unravelling over a tiny book in the most recent The Dickens Society blog post! Big thanks to Dickens Museum for letting me loose around objects, big & small.
Anya Eastman compares the illusion of immediacy provided by the #Dickens-related items Dickens Museum to the stage illusion of Pepper's Ghost. Visitors are made to feel that #Dickens has only just exited the house! #DickensSociety23
As part of the ‘Decolonising Dickens’ roundtable, Christian Lehmann on Dickens’s engagement with the Elgin Marbles. Lehmann notes the route that Dickens would have taken through the museum to the marbles, passing displays of insects and Egyptian artefacts #DickensSociety23
I am so proud to have been awarded the The Dickens Society Partlow Prize at this year’s symposium. Thank you to everyone at #DickensSociety23 for being so generous and encouraging also to Department of English at Royal Holloway RHUL Centre for Victorian Studies Ruth Livesey for making my stateside Dickens ventures possible.
Auction underway at #DickensUniverse23. Item number 5 is a complete Spinet set of 50 historic places from Dickens classics (all watercolour). Of course I spied Dickens Museum 👀
Back after a stateside tour of Dickens conferences. Highlights = being awarded the The Dickens Society’s Partlow Prize & teaching at The Dickens Project. However, nothing quite compares to my mum’s accolades, made all the more perfect by her minor misunderstanding about my life goals…
A reshuffle going on Royal Holloway Art & Culture! We are going from spring to summer (finally) as ‘Spring in the Alps’ is swapped for ‘A Highland Croft’, which is looking fantastic after some conservation work 👀
Just around the corner from my new flat 👀 Intrigued by the merging of multiple texts + specific ‘real’ London sites (blind beggar - where I happened to watch ⚽️ yesterday!) to create image of Vic London, maybe one for Lee Jackson!
I’ll be searching for Dickens in Royal Holloway Art & Culture this Sunday as part of Heritage Open Days. Tickets are free and all are welcome! Join me to explore Nineteenth-Century railway stations, workhouses and arctic expeditions 🚂 🐻❄️
C19 art & copyright history in Royal Holloway Art & Culture next week! one for RHUL Centre for Victorian Studies & pre-raph revolution MAs vicky greenaway
A wonderful evening at the opening of Dickens Museum’s new special exhib! Mutual Friends: The Adventures of Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins is now open! Pics feat one of the exhibition masterminds Martha Clewlow & Wilkie’s passport for the children’s(?) interactive trail 🌎
A lovely morn with Department of English at Royal Holloway’s 3rd year Special Author Dickens students in the RHUL archives (Royal Holloway Library and Archives), incl Little Dorrit & Dombey & Son in serial form, Dickensian playbills & a handwritten letter from Dickens! V lucky to have such a valuable resource on campus 🙏
I can thoroughly recommend these placements to any RHULDoctoralSchool student interested in the heritage/GLAM sector. You’ll work in a wonderful, supportive team & gain invaluable industry experience ⭐️
