What I really like is that this material was discovered entirely by accident. I think too many funding agencies have forgotten that research is not linear and they need to give scientists more space in which to be playful and discover. I suspect we'd see better outcomes.

I had frequent meetings and discussions with Jean-Pierre Sauvage (JPS) from the 1980s onwards. They were always immensely enjoyable. We were very carful not to step on each other’s toes. We have six joint publications between 2011 and 2013 when JPS visited NU on a regular basis.

Our @PNAS (with Prof ZN Chen) is online pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…, we proposed Coordinative Closure approach that can convert entangled Cu template Au-acetylide metallacomplexes to metallaknot with enhanced phosphorescent, reminiscent of Colvalent Capture in organic knot synthesis.
