Spelling bee tonight at Washington. So far, Caroline is one for one. But this story is about her facial expressions.

Picture it. 2023. A downtown Raleigh school media center. Caro is wearing her spelling bee shirt. It has all the words she correctly spelled on her reign of terror during last year’s bee.

She’s sitting on the top step of the media center stage. Glasses on. Disdainful expression. She visibly counts each speller left until her turn. Politely claps for each speller.

She’s doing this thing where she holds her tongue between her teeth. Equal parts gross and intimidating.

She’s counting again. Looking unimpressed with anything. But it’s only the second round.

She looks mad as hell every time there is an easy word given. She’s not here to make friends.

Well. She won. Again. I burst into tears and screamed so loudly that my voice just went right out. She’s incredible.
