.Nellie Bowles continues to be the news roundup/cultural commentary GOAT. This particular point is also true of the ongoing evolution of the term that refers to the “mentally challenged” (is that even the current one? Probably not sry sry sry)

Happy 4th of July, from a Canadian. For most of my life I've been ambivalent about America, but reading this book last year made me truly love the country.

Out of all the quotes I've published from Vance, it's this snippet that I'd pick that best shows the man and why he got into politics

Final note: massive up to authors & funders. 50 million $ and years of hard work on a topic authors care deeply about, & instead of p hacking or pretending things went well, they were rigorous & honest about null results. Journalists: this is very rare and should be highlighted!

Btw, for Ontario journalists, I am personally aware from a very well connected source that the CoAs in Toronto have asked for and taken bribes. Can't say more but if you did through public records and video, you will find many examples of suspicious rejections then approvals.

Really enjoyed listening to Matthew Pines' wide-ranging discussion here. Would be very curious to know if Matt has read qntm's "There Is No Antimemetics Division" given its thematic overlap with his worldview (universeview?) youtube.com/watch?v=YN2Le9…

Miles was at OpenAI, and no longer is. As he notes, internally there are models (incl. multiple "o1" models not open to public) that crush benchmarks; people working on these models don't see slowdown. Another year of progress similar to last year *already baked in the cake*.

4/Now we thought we had the makings of a significant story. But the first rule of good journalism is: No Surprises. You must give the subject of a potential story a fair chance to respond to all of the salient facts in the story.
