Wading into the concussion debate hesitantly, but its a topic that needs to be discussed and dissected with as many opinions and viewpoints as possible. So against my better judgement here are some of my initial views:

1. This is a highly emotive subject and although I would never seek to diminish anyone’s experience: context is key. I believe each case is different and that dealing with this in broad strokes is not the right way to go about it.

2. If we’ve learnt one thing from Covid it is that we can only move as fast as the science and data allows us. 20 years ago we were not armed with the same information that we have at our disposal today. We can only move as fast as the times

3. We need to be clear what the agenda is here. Are we looking for solutions to better inform concussion procedure or protocol, or are we looking for retribution for mistreatment of players?

4. If there is blame, who does it sit with? World Rugby for not putting the right processes in place? Clubs for ignoring concussion protocol? Or players for not being accountable for making poor decisions.

5. I think the 15 point plan outlined by the players in question to safe proof the game is fantastic. Future generations will benefit greatly from this.

6. The NFL were found guilty of hiding the severity of concussion. Are we accusing rugby of doing the same? It might be naivity but I would hope this is not the case. If it is I will also be out with my pitchfork.

The testimonials that I have seen are incredibly hard to watch, I too worry about the long term repercussions BUT in my case I felt armed with the right information to make an educated decision on my future. This is surely not the case for everyone but again - context is key.
