Elon Musk promised $2 trillion in spending cuts but delivered only a fraction of that total. We asked seven budget experts to explain why DOGE couldn't accomplish more. reason.com/2025/05/12/why…

I lost 43 pounds (at latest count) over the last year, and it didn't require Ozempic or anything special; I just stopped absent-mindedly eating more than I needed to eat. I don't think that works for everyone. But it's notable that I never felt hungry, weak, or tired.

Is China's advantage in battery manufacturing due to forced labour and state subsidies? No, argues Hannah Ritchie. Chinese labour costs are cheaper, but it's because of automation not low wages. In fact, US factories use six times as many workers per GWh of battery than BYD.

I hope the recent visit by Donald J. Trump and Elon Musk will help bring Starlink to the UAE and Emirates. Emirates still offers the best service, and the only reason I fly Qatar is because of the onboard Wi-Fi. While Qatar’s inflight internet is great, Doha airport’s

Something I find incredible: The country is supposedly completely broke. The govt is paralysed by its fear of bond markets. And still somehow we have the money to let people buy brand new electric cars from their pre-tax income, effectively paying 60% of the price for them.

Council estates often have loads of land given to green spaces that barely get used. This one is usually empty even on sunny afternoons/evenings. Whereas even small gardens get frequent use. How different would housing estates look if we prioritised private gardens for people?

Oh wow, look at all those nitrous oxide canisters at Glastonbury! Clearly, prohibition’s working wonders - if we do the same to tobacco, smoking will surely just cease…

In ten years obesity will probably be significantly lower, thanks to GLP-1s – which Nesta objects to on cost grounds – and everyone will say it was because we started fining Tesco for selling too much garlic bread.

Why do so few British homes have ACs? 1. 'Part O' Building Regs treat AC as a last resort. 2. Heat pumps that cool too are excluded don't get green grants. 3. Installing a reversible heat pump can leave you with a lower EPC score increasing the cost of your mortgage.

Below are the maximum prices we’ll be offering per MWh of power generated from new wind and solar projects, and these prices are guaranteed for the next 20 years. Last year the average price for gas was about £75/MWh. And we can turn on gas whenever we want; solar and wind

This is a British advert for a heat pump from 1982. The main selling point back then was that it worked as AC in the Summer as well as a heater in the Winter. Today, large grants are available to install heat pumps in the UK, but not for the ones that work as ACs too.
