A great start to the day! Alexander Ahammer presents our joint paper on benzodiazepine use using administrative data on opioid users.

Alexander Ahammer and Analisa Packham present work at 13th annual Econ of risky behaviors workshop (Croatia) showing that crackdown on potent benzodiazepine in Austria caused substitution to less potent benzos, increasing withdrawal, and worsening labor market outcomes. #ERB2024

Habilitation von Alexander Ahammer, JKU Department of Economics mit „On the economics of health, labor, and risky behavior“, welche verschiedene Themen am Schnittpunkt der Arbeitsmarkt- und Gesundheitsökonomie umfasst. 📜 Herzliche Gratulation 🎉go.jku.at/n24o1

A lot of opioid users are consuming benzodiazepines too. Should we restrict benzo prescribing to reduce overdose risk? New work w/ Analisa Packham suggests: maybe not.

Using individual-level data to identify opioid users and to estimate the effect on health and labor market outcomes from a 2012 Austrian reform restricting benzodiazepine use, from Alexander Ahammer and Analisa Packham nber.org/papers/w32804

My paper with Alexander Ahammer is now live and available from the Journal of Health Economics: sciencedirect.com/science/articl… Punchline: we find that more targeted screening for DI benefits has positive impacts for labor force participation and wages, without adverse health consequences

Today Ulrich Glogowsky (JKU Department of Economics) presented “The Parenthood Penalty in Mental Health”, coauthored with Alexander Ahammer (JKU Linz), Martin Halla (WU Economics Dept.) & Timo Hener (Aarhus Universitet). They find parenthood imposes a greater mental health burden on mothers, leading to long-run gender gaps.
