In light of today’s news, I just prompted a conversation with my six year old about school safety. She let me know that her school announced today that they would be doing a “stranger on campus” safety drill tomorrow.

I sat with the idea of a general school safety drill and assessed whether my daughter was mature enough to handle what a “school shooting” was. For her safety and the reality of America, we had to review what guns were and what it meant if someone brought a gun to school.

My child asks: Should I fight back against the shooter? I said no, just run. What if it’s a kid, she asks. I had to pause. She was right. A child or teenager could bring a gun to school. That is our culture. My answer didn’t change, “you still run and hide.”

When reviewing school shootings with a young child, it’s important to inform and not scare. Don’t project your panic. Your kids are looking up to you for all the answers. My daughter loves school and I don’t want to tarnish her experience around learning and playing.

When reviewing school shootings, remind children to follow all instructions. But help them process scenarios if they are separated from their class. This will take multiple conversations over several weeks/months. Again, check your child’s maturity (and your own emotions).

It takes a broken society to raise children who become teenage gunmen. The shooter is a child. We can’t let that part leave the conversation.
