The problem with all the Scottish places seeking city status is they undermine the venerable institution that is the Scottish town. In a country increasingly swamped by motorways and new suburban housing, we need to defend the benefits of comparatively small scale urban areas.

Town Scotland is rich and varied, from south of Scotland market or mill towns, to the former industrial towns of the central belt to some of the larger Highland settlements. You can have a great life or a good day out in all those sorts of places.
