If you’re headed to the Calgary Stampede grounds tonight, be sure to stay hydrated and seek the shade! We’re looking at potentially record-breaking heat later in the day, with downtown already reaching 30C ☀️ The current record is 32C, set back in 1919.

There is a severe thunderstorm watch encroaching on the boundary of Calgary. The system is moving east - some storms could become severe. (note: a slight risk of a tornado as well) #yycweather

Thanks to viewer Darlene for sending in this photo of a shelf cloud near Airdrie! These form when cold air from a storm’s downdraft slams into warmer moist air, lifting it up and creating that shelf‑like structure. They often mean gusty winds and rain are right behind it!

One positive note from all this on-and-off rain lately: the fire danger in Southern Alberta is looking significantly better than before.

And, if you're wondering how much rain Calgary saw in the latest event, the airport measured (from July 13-14) 49.6mm!

There is a special weather statement (see GREEN below) in SW Alberta - From Environment Canada: "A Few Funnel Clouds Have Been Reported Today. More Funnel Clouds Are Possible Until Early Evening. It Is Very Unlikely For Any Of These Funnel Clouds To Touch Down."
