In 2022-23, 92 self-inflicted deaths occurred which was 5 more than last year. These deaths included cases which raised adult safeguarding and self-neglect issues. Prisons have a duty to keep prisoners safe and protect them from abuse and neglect.

Kay Melhuish's self-inflicted death at Eastwood Park prison in 2022 has been found by an inquest jury to have been contributed to by neglect. There were 2 more self-inflicted deaths there within 6 months. Kay's family call for change to prevent more deaths of women in prison.
