It might surprise you to know that these were words I’d told myself over and over again, too many times to count in the past, because I too was in so much agony that I kept devising creative ways to end myself. But knowing that I also deserved happiness, that I needed to hold on,

Alas, as much as I repeated those words and many others to the kinsman, I fear I’d not managed to get through to them. I soon realized I was wrong. Slowly, I watched them regain their will to fight. Watched them gain back full health. I watched them begin to pick up the pieces

And last week, when I woke up to that message, I shed a tear. The message said so many amazing things, but the one thing that stuck out to me the most was, “I’m in a better place now. I’m glad I held on.” Wow! Something that this person thought was impossible only months ago!

It made me happy to do this work I do, all over again. Over the years, I’ve stayed up many nights, texted too many letters, stayed on too many phone calls, working as a suicide intervention counselor. It’s not an easy task and I often prefer not to speak about it. However,
