Outcomes of the Seagrass Ocean Rescue Upscaling Project (SORUP) and efforts of Project Seagrass . Driving forward #seagrass #restoration and #conservation 🌱🤘

Last week we were out testing two novel methods of #seagrass seed planting using towed sleds. The first may be recognised from research by Orth et al in 2009, a sled designed to inject Seagrass seeds in an gelatin solution which we modified to work using a peristaltic pump.

The second sled was designed by myself to plant hemp bags containing sand and Seagrass seed, fed by pipe from the vessel.

Both systems worked well and we planted 50,000 seeds, not bad for their first time getting wet in the UK.

Something a little bit different from August. The SORUP project looking at ways to expand #seagrass seed collection using a bespoke harvester. This device trims the top of the meadow collecting seeds with minimal damage and maximum yield for #restoration

Great to have a 12 strong team from our funders ⁦Former NatureScot account⁩ help us with native oyster grading, and seagrass seed processing today. We released more oysters onto the seabed and extracted another 20,000 seed - soon to be planted on the seabed.
