In addition to the alligator snappers, we were happy to see this female Gulf Coast Spiny Softshell. Residing primarily in rivers, this species is smaller and more of a habitat specialist than the Florida Softshell, but as this #turtle demonstrated, they can still get quite big!

It’s not often we get to see an #EasternIndigoSnake in the summer! They disperse away from sandhills into cooler, more productive hunting grounds during the spring and summer, so we were quite lucky to encounter this beautiful young male as it crossed a rural road.

We get a lot of questions about how to keep dogs safe from venomous snake bites this time of year, and Garden & Gun magazine recently interviewed Dr. Chris Jenkins asking the same question. Check out the full article here: gardenandgun.com/articles/what-…

Dr. Jenkins sits down with Dr. Henry Mushinsky from the Univ of S. Florida, about his early love for herpetology from catching watersnakes in Louisiana bayous. Moving to FL shifted his focus to conservation biology amid the region's development pressures. oriannesociety.org/snake-talk/

The Orianne Society, known for conserving species like indigo snakes, also tackles research projects that fly under the radar. On Fieldnotes, explore our work monitoring Raillietiella orientalis, an invasive lungworm threatening snakes in the Southeast. oriannesociety.org/fieldnotes/col…

Rain delays Caleb’s restoration plans at the Longleaf Stewardship Center’s wetland area. Meanwhile, our team shifts focus to another unit, clearing scrub oak and slash pine, and wildlife is already taking advantage of the freshly opened habitat. Watch: oriannesociety.org/lighting-a-mat…

Kiley was recently joined by Jessie Johnson, a biologist with VTrans, and demonstrated how to use our radio telemetry equipment on a project we're partnering on as part of a broader wildlife passage initiative. It didn’t take her long to get the hang of it! #turtle #conservation

The fun thing about fieldwork is you never know what you’ll incidentally encounter on any given day. For example, we recently crossed paths with this Eastern Coral Snake while on our way to check aquatic traps. #OrianneSociety #snakes #easterncoralsnake #Micrurusfulvius

This upland wetland was visited by a couple of the #turtles we are tracking as part of a #wildlife corridor study this year. With plenty of sun, lots of vegetation to hide in, and plenty of food for the turtles, we can see why they are drawn here.

Ben and Alex recently helped this little Florida Softshell across the road and into a wetland. #Softshellturtles are incredibly fast and agile, especially in water, but unfortunately, they tend to freeze when faced with traffic on a road. So we're always happy to help them out.

We recently received some help tracking #WoodTurtles from New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation technician Callie Beth-Dwyer. With her extensive experience in radio telemetry, it took Callie almost no time to get accustomed to our equipment and start locating our turtles.

Kiley found unusual tracks and consulted a wildlife tracker - they were from a skunk's defensive scrape, a behavior used to startle predators. This is uncommon in the Eastern U.S., possibly due to differences in local skunk predators. See one in action: youtu.be/Mkbl_GuzCMI

We hit a major milestone at our Longleaf Stewardship Center: the last two large sand pine tracts were cut! This opens the door for native groundcover restoration and longleaf pine planting. The remaining small patches of sand pine will offer valuable chainsaw training.
