If councils actually left them to grow over the summer (April-September) then this would also be beneficial for grass loving butterflies.
The Cuckoos are back! Over the moon to have seen this beautiful female on the moor today. Watch to the end and you'll hear a male calling, too!

A Hedgehog visited the feathers last night.
Is this an example of self-anointing in this clip?
Note how the 'hog presses itself down on the feathers before reaching around to lick itself.
(View previous tweet, to see the feathers)

Cut back, got all-clear, now grow grasses + other food & nectar plants until they catch up again. Best year for insects was when plots around mine were in fallow! Try explain this to deaf ears 🙄
NearbyWild #RewildTheEarth 🍃💚🍃 Richard Fox Robert Macfarlane Matthew Wright Miles King Brigit Strawbridge Donna Rainey Eoghan Daltun 🌍 Craig Bennett Ian Denton Vital to remember that grasses feed larvae of at least 17 of our native butterflies, some increasingly scarce/rare. Allowing grasses to grow on my allotment (though inspectors told me they were a serious infringement of rules🙄) increased the butterfly count by 5 new species!
NearbyWild #RewildTheEarth 🍃💚🍃 Interestingly the Gatekeepers on my allotment seem to prefer to mate in the Hedge bedstraw every year and then I presume the female moves on to the bents, the fescues or Meadow grasses to lay her eggs although I have yet to observe this event.

And of course, the knock-on effects for other wildlife would be significant too, such as foraging hedgehogs and birds. Win win!
