The New Vehicle Efficiency Standard we’ve campaigned so fiercely for was voted into law by the Federal Parliament last night!

This is a win for the climate, a win for our health, a win for our hip pockets, & a win for all Australians – whether they drive a car or not.

Congratulations to the Walkley Foundation for taking a stand against fossil fuel sponsors!“Businesses across the news, entertainment & music industry should follow suit & clean up their act. Dirty money should not fund the future of Australia’s arts industry” - Amanda McKenzie.

To be clear, Environment Minster ⁦Tanya Plibersek⁩ CAN still stop new fossil fuel projects on the basis of their climate impacts if she chooses to.

It’s just that she can also choose to ignore the climate impacts if she wants to. abc.net.au/news/2024-05-1…

Good on Walkley Foundation for ditching fossil fuel sponsorship! Others across arts, entertainment, news and sports need to follow suit and reject, as the Walkley Foundation say, support from companies that ‘offer no tangible benefit to humanity’. The Walkley Foundation ends sponsorship with fossil fuel company Ampol.

'The foundation does not accept money from companies... that it deems to pose a significant reputational risk due to the nature of their dealings that offer no tangible benefit to humanity.'

Fed Court handed down “Living Wonders Case” finding that the Enviro Minister does *not* have to consider the environmental impacts of climate pollution when approving coal and gas projects. The outcome is a blow and shows our national enviro laws are absolutely broken.

If you're *not* struggling right now, you could consider donating your $300 energy rebate to a worthy cause. If you're wondering which one, the Climate Council would love you to join us! 😍donate.climatecouncil.org.au

The includes billions for clean industry, no new money for gas. This Federal Budget is a decisive turn towards Australia’s clean energy future. There is far more to do - but this is the right direction.

Exxon, Woodside, Shell and Chevron contributed less to the Commonwealth government than Australia’s beer drinkers, who raised $2.5 billion through the beer excise. thenewdaily.com.au/finance/2024/0…

One thing I wished more people understood about climate change is that we have not yet experienced any where near the full consequences of the warming we've already caused.

Here's a 🧵 explaining why...

Tragically, we now have 7 bleaching maps for the Great Barrier Reef.

In 2016, 30% of the corals died. 51% died in the northern region that year.

In 2024, the extent and severity of bleaching is much greater, and mortality of corals on orange reefs has already exceeded 50%.

The science tells us that every tonne of coal burned pushes us closer to climate disaster, so extending a rusted, polluting clunker is a mistake. Solar, wind & storage can meet NSW energy needs - the Minns govt needs to get on with the job of delivering it theguardian.com/australia-news…
