There’s something hypnotic to me about the empty seats at Goodison before the gates open. The identikit nature of those pieces of plastic and metal (and wood) yet each is the site of a unique-but-shared experience of watching the game.

These are taken at each side of Goodison.

Everton outside-right focus: John McIlhatton.
Signed by EFC in April 1946 from Albion Rovers, McIlhatton was viewed as a promising replacement for Torry Gillick. He made 58 appearances, scoring once. Sadly, he died at just 33.

Everton outside-right focus: Torry Gillick.
Signed from Glasgow Rangers in 1935, on his day, Torry was one of Goodison’s most dazzling wide players. Key to the league championship win in 1938/39. Returned to Rangers at the end of the war & finished playing at Partick Thistle.

Everton outside-right focus: Albert Geldard.
The Yorkshireman was a terrifically quick winger who won the FA Cup as a Toffeeman in 1933. Left for Bolton in 1938 after 180 & 37 goals appearances. He had aspirations to be a performing magician or a journalist.
