RIP Faith Ringgold (1930-2024), who leaves an incredible legacy after a life dedicated to art &activism. In story quilts such as the French Collection, she used textile art to intervene in narratives of art history & modernism, rewriting the canon to centre the Black female gaze

➰ In our newsletter, our monthly modernist maker is Ruth Asawa ➰ For Asawa, making was an essential part of being in the world & a fundamental human right. Her practice was open to the world - connected to family life & community as much as to abstraction & modernist form (1/2)

Glass eyes made by Mollie Surman of Kingston, Surrey in the mid 1900s. Surman was from a family of glassblowers and made her first 'eye' when she was 12. The main eye would be blown from white glass before other colours of glass were added in to make the iris, pupil, and veins.
