I just don’t get the tagline on these large excavator shovels. The company name would have to be spelled differently for it to make sense.

There is perry-related content in this, so we won’t beat ourselves up about the break in perry month the same week it started. Next year we won’t suggest a 200-300 word submission, as it was clearly ignored by some 😜 Well, I won’t be throwing the first stone.

I’m a little shook from a bit of a health scare the other night, but the show must go on. Spent most of the afternoon clearing rotting fruit from under pear trees, then mowing nice and short to make the harvest easier. Well, till my body said stop. There will be Helden 2024!

187 bottles of Schefflenzer Edelmost filled this afternoon. I thought a very simple, regionally typical cider, but it’s lovely. After that I had to eat, and there was a fest on at the local supermarket, with a beach bar. Food, a couple beers and a chat, then home again.

My obsession may be getting out of hand. But sometimes the shapes and colours of the pips of a pear can be a useful ID diagnostic when it’s a toss up between a couple potential candidates.

Harvest got rained off this evening, so I finished putting reference pips into their little capsules and started putting them in some sort of storage order. Only about 84 varieties so far, hope to get a new slew of them this year.

#NewProfilePic taken at Ross Cider during the fest by Diane while she, Justin Wells and I were walking through the orchards with Norman. I look positively normal!

I was recently interviewed by Hochstamm Deutschland, a group dedicated to preserving traditional meadow orchards. In it, I namedrop a shit-load of Irish and UK makers, a certain perry book, Cider Review and have deep thoughts on rootstocks.😄 In German. hochstamm-deutschland.de/nachricht/vom-…
