Total's Patrick Pouyanné says the quiet bit out loud: clean hydrogen is expensive. But expecting new use cases in transport to do the heavy lifting and drive down production costs was always absolutely delusional (or downright cynical - you choose).

This is not compatible with a genuinely low carbon grid. The point of these gas plants is to ensure security during an unusual event; effectively acting as insurance, for which we have to pay a premium. It is likely to be cheaper if Govt owns and operates them directly. /16

By effectively giving gas plant a higher CM payment as well as the ability to play in the wholesale market for 750 hours per year, there will be dozens of days per year when gas pushes LDES out of the merit order. /15

John Taylor Nicola Terry These are just the bids for the amount of subsidy requested. Below find the actual levelised costs of hydrogen. Transport not included but most (all?) winners will be using hydrogen onsite to make products like ammonia or synthetic methane

The 'surprising reasons' why olive oil has got so expensive, according to the Daily Mail

A surprising story in three parts, but not, perhaps, for the reasons Mail thinks…

1 OMG it costs more than wine!
2 Srsly prices nearly doubled
3 'what is going on? Climate change…'

Has anyone put forward a plausible theory of why Musk fired Tesla's supercharger team? Every energy or industry analyst I'm aware of views it as an act of insanity.

Ireland today increased its carbon tax on fuels from €41 to €56 per tonne which equates to around €122 on a typical gas bill and €187 on a typical oil bill. Revenue is ringfenced for climate action. Introduced in 2010 and set to reach €100 by 2030 citizensinformation.ie/en/money-and-t…

Very disappointing if true. Labour’s plans for clean energy and industrial transitions must be accompanied by a strong package of workers’ rights to ensure a greener economy supports a just transition, good jobs & a fairer society. ft.com/content/fe1608…

Very much enjoyed speaking the Lords Science & Technology committee yesterday with David Joffe, although watching back I moved my hands so much it looks like I was encouraging the Lords to guess which cup the energy system was under. Here's a brief summary of what I said. /1

Data from Germany (I’m guessing the German version of the AA?)

3 year old EVs over two times less likely to break down than 3 year old petrol/diesel cars

Unsurprising really - there’s a lot more to go wrong in an internal combustion engine than an electric motor

Nothing says ‘zero brand management’ than blocking a side road crossing & sightline on a major schools (plural) travel route (c2600 students just round the corner) at school travel time. Parking bay empty to the right. Don’t be like ‘Brighton Trade Windows Hates Kids’

Fresh news: this Polestar 5 test mule just charged its 77 kWh battery from 10-80% in 10 minutes.
What's really cool is that this is real technology being tested in the real world, not 𝘮𝘢𝘺𝘣𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘥𝘢𝘺 stuff.
Combustion tech is dead tech. 😎

25 years ago today a nail bomb exploded in The Admiral Duncan gay bar, killing three people and injuring more than 70.
One of the injured was my friend Jon Cash - West Yorks - Agent: www.steinplays.com who recalled that terrible night and the homophobic climate that prompted the crime.

This graph on number of public chargers pretty much shows exponential growth

Slightly undermines narrative that we aren't installing enough

Now it isn't all about numbers - we need to ensure we're putting the right chargers in the right places

But still, not to be sniffed at

Would you buy an electric car? If not, why not? The reasons given will go into a video series I’m making, which is aimed at acknowledging people’s apprehensiveness. I know it’s X, but try to make them rational 😃

Am I the only middle-aged white male train driver who managed to see this wasn't an attack on the likes of me, but a plea to see further progress in diversification and fairness? It *is* happening, albeit slowly and we do need to ensure the entry tests are fit for purpose.
