Penny Gaines It won’t open until at least 2039. It was meant to open next year. We will have lived 20 years in blighted homes, cracked from earthquake strength vibrations, breathing in their dust and being driven insane by their noise & their abuse with not one penny compensation.
Nick Kingsley HS2 escaped proper scrutiny by using the Hybrid Bill process. Only 4% of the design was considered necessary for the HB process & all it took was whipped MPs to vote for it in principle. It was bound to be a disaster. Don't blame the planning process - blame the concept & lies.
It's always a pleasure to meet and chat Simon Birkett of Clean Air in London So many memories!
Fantastic to see Sian Berry highlighting our report ‘A breath of fresh air’ during her 10 minute rule motion on clean air. Urgent action on air quality is needed if we are to reduce avoidable deaths and improve population health across the country. Read the report:
peter jones Unbelievably Lord Hendy repeats the lie to Transport Committee that higher speeds means higher capacity. For one train its true, but false when trains follow each other much further apart for safety. Maximum capacity reduces above 100mph. Higgins lied to TC & Public Accounts Committee in 2014/5.
Kate Lamble Just listened to Episode 1. It's great. One of Andrew McNaughton's big mistakes, that still persists, is the belief that higher speeds increase capacity. Hendy & Over said this last week to Transport Committee Trains need to be much further apart for safety & capacity reduces.
Kate Lamble Transport Committee HS lines have to increasingly larger curves: vertical & horizontal. That significantly increases the scale & number of structures, earthworks & tunnels & much else. McN's claim that the difference is only 10% (it was from 200 to 400km) shows he was incompetent & is now lying.
Speccie: Not what it was. Lost sooo many excellent writers. Greatest losses are Fraser & Jeremy Clarke. But replacing Katy Balls with Tim Shipman, judging by his smug performance at last night's Coffee House, questions Gove's judgement. I'm contemplating cancelling. The Spectator
Bryan Davey HS2 Ltd Most of the money spent on WCML in the noughties was for deferred maintenance, not an upgrade. It's not full. HS2 will make no noticeable difference to road traffic or take freight off the roads. Throwing over £7bn a year at HS2 is deferring essential work on the rail network.
Kate Lamble Hi Kate. What a shame you were taken in by the future proofing argument that it had to be designed for 250mph. Or that tunnels were the problem. HS2 was not future proofed for capacity & has almost zero resilience with just one track each way that can't be fixed while trains run.
