It was so nice to finally present my honours research at #AusBatSoc2024 after workshopping the idea at the 2022 conference!

#BREAKING: Toondah Harbour has been saved! 🎉 We are thrilled to tell you that Toondah Harbour has finally been saved after Walker Corp withdrew their real-estate proposal today. This is a huge win for the environment and the birds that call Toondah home!

Last week Tanya Plibersek referred to an internal audit of environmental offset compliance when announcing the establishment of a national EPA minister.dcceew.gov.au/plibersek/tran… The audit apparently found that 1 in 7 developments could be in breach of their #offset conditions 🧵

This is a heartbreaking day for so many across the country who care for nature, and especially for the local people and Traditional Owners who have fought so hard to protect this amazing place, and its wildlife much of which will now die. So much for ‘nature positive’.

Well imagine if we actually listened to the experts ... who predicted this was going to happen ... When will we start taking environmental protection seriously, and start avoiding harm? abc.net.au/news/2024-05-0…

This morning I lay witness to perhaps 20% of the entire Swift Parrot population. Thrill and despair in the same scene. To think they could be extinct within a decade. We need to do more. Their value is greater than that of harvested timber.

This government promised big on nature but is not delivering - no strong laws and standards to protect, no resources to restore and recover. Hopeless.

Inspirational; but also a sad truth - we all need to work to save the remaining patches of vegetation around us. Left to the powers-that-be, it would be whittled away, 'offset' etc until very little is left. abc.net.au/news/2024-05-1…

What can inner city residents do to repair our environment - Q from National Press Club - urban spaces are disproportionately important for biodiversity & threatened species; keeping this biodiversity in cities increases people's exposure to nature. So important and needs care!

This local habitat is under immediate threat from development. It is one of the few places in the greater Brisbane area that contains the iconic Frill-necked Lizard! The endangered Collared Delma (Delma torquata) is also suspected to be here. Petition: queenslandconservation.org.au/save_woogaroo_…

New research estimates the cost of recovering Australia’s threatened species to be a whopping AU$583B per year for at least 30 years. While the figure isn’t proposed as a realistic budget for biodiversity conservation, it highlights the sheer scale of work to be done.
