nature.com/articles/s4158… Super important report on the prospects for food system sustainability. This weeks IPCC rep't was obviously important, but food systems often do not get enough attention given how critical they are to humanity.

Paul Hawken's book Drawdown is an excellent resource for those who want to look at climate change solutions beyond just focusing on energy (which of course is a critical part, but not the whole story). vox.com/energy-and-env… via Vox

vox.com/a/weather-clim… Pretty great data visualization here. The numbers here really put warming trends into a context I think people can understand.

Interesting country index of food system sustainability. US has some work to do, especially on nutrition (diet composition and obesity esp) and environment (water quality, diversity). foodsustainability.eiu.com/country-rankin…

The new Farm Bill will cut spending on working lands programs, especially CSP. While these cuts are a big loss, there are some bright spots too, esp. more targeting and big gains for RCPP. shar.es/aaJ8yP via @growingreturns

Our VP Tim Boring was on CNN today talking about impacts of trade tensions with China on Michigan ag. Tim spoke about the state of trade and the need for open markets. #tradewar #tariffs #AgricultureNews

"The reality is that agriculture can be leaders in solving this pollution crisis and creating energy independence...agriculture can make a huge difference right now in solving a multitude of problems" - Sen. Debbie Stabenow wrapping up her thoughts on the #ClimateSmartAg hearing

Emphasizes the need for many stakeholders to get on the same page with conservation. We need to engage those with economic and social resources to support farmers in advancing sustainability.

Worrying times for agriculture, but there are opportunities for innovation as well. Farmers just need to be empowered to keep being creative.

Every time I hear/read “we will educate farmers” I cringe a bit. I think about how important the synergy is between research, Extension, farmers, consultants etc. We learn alongside each other - it’s much more productive that way. At least that’s my approach in #soilhealth

This plenary was so good. The environmental community can gain so much by working to incorporate as many perspectives as possible. The expansiveness of Indigenous land ethics is so mind opening and empowering. #issrm2019

'Mid-Sized Farms Are Disappearing. This Program Could Reverse the Trend.' via Civil Eats - civileats.com/2019/06/11/mid… Interesting effort to invest in infrastructure to support mid-sized farms. Not tied directly to environmental outcomes, but still important for ag diversity

Interesting take, though maybe lays more blame for the current structure of US ag on crop insurance. I do appreciate laying out a big vision for what ag could look like. What happens if we eliminate crop insurance altogether? newfoodeconomy.org/eliminate-crop…
