. Courtney Walcott on the importance of engaging youth: the world is trying to tell you to accept things as they are… and young people have the ability to move past that and name that something is wrong.

How do we overcome barriers, oppression, and intentional exclusion from our political systems to change our systems from the inside? Tera Cardinal says that, for her, it’s the knowledge that “without us there to change it, it will never change.”

Nicole Schmidt reminds us of the importance of encouraging others to run or get more involved. Especially to encourage diversity and recognize the voices that aren’t as represented. For her, it took someone encouraging her to help her break through and run.

Youth have to change it from within… we need to be a part of this system, says Tera. The way to change is from within. And things like dress codes that seem like barriers become less important when you share your ideas and your perspectives with confidence.

Youth want to feel engaged. Consultation can be a checkbox, says Nicole, people say they’re consulting but it’s not meaningful. This needs to change.

What is a system? Most systems are systems of interactions. Politics are the rules of those interactions, says Courtney Walcott. If someone else made the rules, they can decide what is valuable. Don’t give away all your power. Learn how to advocate and where to influence the rules.

“The cost of apathy is high. The cost of apathy is higher than anything else.”Remind elected officials that they represent you. Vote, but also show up!

It’s up to organizations to provide the info voters need in a non-partisan way. Things that REALLY affect you on the day to day, says Tera.

How do we get youth who do not want to be involved to care? There is a difference between not caring and feeling powerless. “What I care about… I don’t think I can change it.” Is most common, says Courtney Walcott…

… But speak about issues, speak about ideas and action. Give them the tools to talk about what they care about and take action.

Nicole Schmidt talks about getting polls on campus for municipal elections. If you actually want youth in the process- find the barriers and break them down systematically. It’s the root of facilitating engagement. Make it easier.

What is the role of education in political dialogue? Tera says we need to be careful and realize that this person might not have the same information. Be humble and approach gently. Talk to people with different beliefs, consider what might be similar and TRY.
