Today’s letter is Q, so we’re looking at Quality of Life (QoL). QoL is a patient-reported outcome used in clinical trials and cancer treatment to assess a child (and their family)’s perception of their physical, psychological and social health. #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth

R is for Radiotherapy☢️ Radiotherapy is used across many types of childhood cancers and at various time points, such as to shrink the tumour before surgery, in combination with chemotherapy, or to relieve symptoms caused by the tumour. #Radiotherapy #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth

S is for #Survivorship. Even once cancer treatment has finished, children still face an array of challenges. This can include psychological effects such as depression/anxiety, neurocognitive effects such as learning disabilities and memory loss, and physical effects.

It’s a no brainer that the T in the A-Z of ANZCHOG would be for Trials! ANZCHOG is the national Cancer Cooperative Trials Group (CCTG) for childhood cancer. We actively work with international trial consortia to ensure AU & NZ children can access the latest promising treatments.

Better follow-up care for childhood #cancer survivors is the aim of a new $5.4mill study led by UQ News. J Pole from #CHSR's QDHeC says focus has been on “the cure”, without necessarily considering psychosocial and long-term health effects of treatment. bit.ly/4gsMbFX

U is for Ultrasound 🏥 Ultrasounds can be used to detect lumps, masses or tumours in children. It’s commonly used to find the best biopsy site at diagnosis, however it can also be used with other scans to assess the cancer’s response to treatment. #ANZCHOG #ChildhoodCancer

W is for Wilms Tumour🧬 A Wilms tumour is a cancer that can develop in one or both kidneys. They are most commonly diagnosed in children under the age of 5. Wilms tumours are named after Dr. Max Wilms who first described the disease back in 1899! #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth

Today’s letter is X so we’re highlighting Xerostomia! Xerostomia is the clinical name for dry mouth, a common side effect of cancer treatment. A dry mouth can make it harder to chew/swallow foods and even change how food tastes.

Y is for Young Adults! The definition of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) varies however it is commonly defined as people aged between 15-24. Around 4 AYAs are diagnosed with cancer each day in AU & NZ & the most common diagnosis is Hodgkin Lymphoma. #AdolescentCancer #AYA
