Knowing how to give a good talk is a crucial skill to have, but it's mostly not formally taught very well. Here's a 🧵on my strategy for how to prepare for the presentation, actually present it, and then answer the questions.

Thanks Boaz Barak and my colleagues for their unfailing support, and U.S. National Science Foundation for the opportunity. My brilliant students and I can now think more about quantum many-body systems while hanging around at the CS area.

I posted a - seemingly basic - question about Johnson-Lindenstrauss lemma on stackexchange and will appreciate any thoughts. cstheory.stackexchange.com/questions/5248…

In 2007, I was depressed b/c I had been on the acad job mkt for yrs w/o a job to show for it. My late father said to me: "You're the big pot. You hold a lot of water, so you take a while to boil, but when you do, you will cook everything!" When something doesn't go my way...

I don't know anything about this case, but this anonymous email is terrible. We tenured professors have a responsibility to mentor and protect new faculty members. This includes protecting their right to speak out about things they believe need fixing. This is how we improve!

New paper with Quynh T. Nguyen , Nikolas Breuckmann and a wonderful summary by Quynh. We set out to find a Qcircuit->Hamiltonian mapping similar to classical Cook-Levin, and ended up with a picture connecting fault tolerance, tensor networks and qPCP conjecture.

V2 of this work is now at arxiv.org/abs/2309.16475 with several new contents, such as reproving QMA-completeness of log local Hamiltonians without using Feynman-Kitaev construction (but with lot more work), addressing local indistinguishability etc.

A beautiful work by Itai and Miklos (arxiv.org/abs/2410.13549) on a variant of local Hamiltonian problem that’s between the classical and the quantum world. They show that a PCP theorem holds here, adding to the growing set of evidence in favour of the quantum PCP conjecture.
