The soft left is best understood as 2 very different groups. One shares some values with the hard left but rejects its strategy (Khan, Miliband, Rayner). The other is largely apolitical/soft right MPs using it as a dodge for clear political views (Powell, Cooper, Watson).

Newsnight again has Nick Watt reporting on disquiet about Starmer’s leadership. Similar story - don’t know if he’ll last next summer.

BBC Newsnight (@bbcnewsnight) 's Twitter Profile Photo

"I had loyalists coming up to me saying it's now 'when' not 'if' Keir Starmer goes." Nicholas Watt hears from Labour members who doubt whether the PM can connect with voters, and resent the way in which he conducted his government reshuffle. #Newsnight

Steve Rotheram and I have worked hard to bring new investors to the table to support the Liverpool-Manchester railway. Richard Tice MP 🇬🇧, assuming he’s already in office, tells them: “Don’t bother.” The entitlement and arrogance of it is off the scale.🤷🏻‍♂️

This article by Bell Ribeiro Addy backing the call for an Employment Rights Bill mark 2 demonstrates the strong voice she could be for workers rights if elected deputy leader.I urge trade union members to contact their Labour MP &urge them to nominate Bell politicshome.com/opinion/articl…

The leadership of the new left party is apparently 6 independent MPs: Zarah Sultana MP Jeremy Corbyn Shockat Adam MP Adnan Hussain MP Ayoub Khan MP Iqbal Mohamed MP. I'm tweeting to call on them to launch party membership this week and to urgently agree a process for an online conference.

Unemployment is on the rise. The economy isn't working for many people. At PMQs I called on the Prime Minister to break with failed economic orthodoxy but I wasn't convinced by his answer. See the clip and my response below 👇

This will be a big issue for Reform. It is a party ultimately controlled by a section of Britain’s financial elite who don’t much care about investment in its nations and regions. Tice and Farage were Thatcherites, half of Reform’s potential vote worry about a Tory return…

Labour leadership candidate Bell Ribeiro-Addy says Peter Mandelson's relationship with pedophile Jeffrey Epstein is "extremely concerning" and he should resign if an investigation recommends it

Here’s the deputy leadership pitch of Paula Barker, a supporter of the new soft-left Mainstream Labour group, stressing pluralism: labourlist.org/2025/09/paula-…

The Employment Rights Bill is a major achievement but it doesn’t go far enough. Working people did not vote for half-measures or delayed change. To complete the task, Labour must commit to a second Employment Rights Bill. politicshome.com/opinion/articl…

I've just been reminded how in 2010, at a Labour leadership hustings at the GMB conference, I reported that candidates were asked by Mary Turner: "Would you invite Peter Mandelson to join your Shadow Cabinet?" "All of us believe in dignity in retirement," replied Ed Miliband.

If Ribeiro-Addy isn’t on the ballot and Powell runs a campaign which is loyal to Starmerism, then a good chunk of 2024 Labour voters are going to conclude that the party is not a broad church but a narrow cult. That would have consequences for local and devolved elections in May.
