Watching Lost for Words on SBS Australia highlights the importance of developing fundamental mental literacy skills across all ages. Mundane daily tasks and routines all involve reading and/or writing in some shape or form.

Tasks such as reading a recipe to cook, making a shopping list, ordering food, filling in forms, completing a driving test etc. are topics explored by this documentary series. Closing the gap also means making sure we create authentic experiences for our learners.

Put this together this morning because I'm a big nerd.

Meet Mike. His goal for increasing his literacy skills is to order meals at a restaurant for his partner. Authentic learning is creating a safe environment for learners like Mike to practice and feel success - in this case, a makeshift cafe for his classmates. #LostForWords
