Writing in a hotel—Day 8. Folks have asked, “Don’t you have a desk?” Yup. This glass counter where I keep snacks. But my boobs are too big & this chair is built for someone 2x my height, so I get shoulder lightning bolts. Hence, I roam. Off again now.

On Fri. May 3, Red Hen Press editor Kate Gale will read from Under a Neon Sun, which draws upon her college experience of living in her car. Amber Flame, Oregon Book Award finalist Alyssa Graybeal & I will join Kate at Elliott Bay Book Co. to support her Three Rooms Press: Open for Submissions novel. Come!
Writing in a hotel—Day 7. The day I feared finally arrived. I ran out of clean clothes. Of all my unorthodox nooks, this one tried me most. Chair was too low. Washer too noisy. Nearly abandoned ship. But then I climbed on top of the dryer and enjoyed its pleasing tumble…. Bombeck Workshop
Writing in a hotel—Day 6. Ironing board desk. I can’t think when I last even used one of these, but I’m drafting a fight scene and channeling the spirit of generations of women who thanklessly ironed, starched, & pressed and aren’t gonna do it any more. Bombeck Workshop
Overwhelmed to be on this list of Guggenheim Fellows along with so many writers I admire. Immensely grateful to GuggenheimFoundation

Living in a hotel—Day 5. Rainy day here, so I took to the treadmill. Maggie Freitag Ask Ann Patchett how on earth she wrote Tom Lake this way? Even on the slowest setting, I’ve nearly toppled off 3 times. Tomorrow, I might go write in that pool…. Bombeck Workshop
Living in a hotel—Day 4. Breakfast. When the words are flowing, you have to listen. Can’t mess with the muse. Bombeck Workshop
Living in a hotel—Day 3. What a difference a day makes. The eclipse coaxed all the flowers into bloom. Even the dandelions said hello when I finally got out for my walk. Bombeck Workshop
had the loveliest time chatting with Annmarie Kelly-Harbaugh about the complicated nature of upbringings, the joys of weightlifting, and how both those influenced the creation of BROUGHTUPSY for the Wild Precious Life podcast.

Living in a hotel, Day 2. ECLIPSE. I was excited to see it and take a photo for posterity.
I missed.
Luckily, others did better. Here's to gazing through darkness to reach the light. And to making friends who take better pictures.
Now, back to work. Bombeck Workshop
Living in a hotel, Day 1. Still in my pajamas. Floating along on the wisdom, grace and honest-to-God magic of the Bombeck Workshop writers I’ve met these past few days. If you need me, I’ll be right here: Channeling the power of this robe. Saying YES to the words that come.
