I was at VCU last night. The police tear gassed students almost immediately after arriving without any announcements or warnings. This drew a bigger crowd as the night went on. The students were incredibly well organized and circulated zines from other campus encampments.

It's hard to understand why an economics professor showing concern for a student would be thrown to the ground and arrested. This is not an obvious way to defuse a crisis.

It is worth watching this CNN video from the moment Emory Econ Professor Caroline Fohlin came across the violent arrest of a protester on campus and asked the police, with shock, 'What are you doing?' That's all that prompted an officer to hurl her to the ground and handcuff her.
