Sixty years ago, thousands gathered for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The leadership and organizing powers of A. Philip Randolph, Bayard Rustin and Dorothy Height were key as the march drew people from communities around the U.S. to hear Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Diverse organizations came together under one banner, including some that had previously disagreed. The march's manual said: "We march to redress old grievances and to help resolve an American crisis. That crisis is born of the twin evils of racism and economic deprivation."
