wrote about how everyone should be calculating their cost-per-wear before they buy new clothes, in my latest for WaPo’s climate solutions desk. way easier to stop buying trendy junk AND to feel good about expensive tees and socks if you realize what you’re paying per wear

super tiny nuclear reactors could power towns in alaska, industrial mining sites, military bases — anywhere dependent on diesel generators. tried to clear up some confusion about microreactors for Heatmap News

i'm reporting a truly depressing story about climate change killing beautiful trees. story coming soon, but for now am reminded that we all should savor the natural world we have, bc we will lose some of the most beautiful parts of that world, no matter what.

go be outside!!

Objectively funny that — of all the possible phrases that communicate the boring idea that Americans will use more electricity in the future — the one that the utility industry settled on is “load growth.”

Update: This is worse than I thought. Workers in Nigeria, Rwanda, and South Africa are also reporting that they are being blocked from the website or cannot create an account. It's possible that Scale AI suspended Remotasks far beyond just Kenya.

every year, the feds send wild horses (+ burros) to a prison in Nevada, where people who are incarcerated spend months training them

i want to write about this: how the trainers got there, what it means for the people who do it, etc. If there's an editor out there for this...?

how did I grow up less than a two hour drive from a town that has been on fire since 1962 and have no idea? this coal seam may continue to burn for hundreds of years, making the area uninhabitable. How is this not something people talk about!!

'You are almost certainly not using your grandmother’s phone to call your friends, her toaster oven to cook, or her typewriter to function at your desk job,' Anna Kramer writes. 'Yet the stand mixer endures.' theatlantic.com/technology/arc…

'You will never pass down an Apple Watch or Sonos speaker through the generations—they’ve been cut off from that possibility by firmware updates and new operating systems.' A KitchenAid stand mixer, on the other hand... Nice one from Anna Kramer theatlantic.com/technology/arc…

I wrote about the legacy of the KitchenAid stand mixer for The Atlantic. It's the only appliance that still works exactly the way it's supposed to AND lasts forever. There's something so special about that in a world full of crappy tech.
