NEW: Study confirms Tonga volcano had the highest plume ever recorded. At 35 miles high, the ash cloud generated by the eruption is also the first to have been observed in the mesosphere, a layer of the atmosphere more commonly associated with shooting stars. More info⬇️

#Sentinel5P #TROPOMI data for the #MaunaLoa #eruption showing ~0.2 Tg SO₂ on Nov 28. SO₂ furthest east is at higher altitude than the plume nearer the #volcano. For reference, we estimate that the 1984 Mauna Loa eruption emitted ~1.2 Tg SO₂. Copernicus EU BIRA-IASB ESA Earth Observation

One year ago today, the #HungaTongaHungaHaapai volcano erupted. Thankfully with, bearing in mind the size of the eruption, few casualties and damage. This eruption was so big it confused us scientists! We couldn't treat it how we normally do.

Come hear about our work at Earth Observation Data Group on the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption in the #iavcei2023 Hunga session today. We have two talks: one in the morning on Isabelle Taylor's work on the HTHH SO2 (10H) and one in the afternoon where I'm going to talk about ice (11H)!

Looks like a big eruption from #Sheveluch occurred overnight (local time). Plume becomes identifiable around 13 UTC on 10 April. Some clear ash and SO2 signals in Himawari-9 AHI data.

Updated Himawari-9 observations of the ash and SO2 from the #Sheveluch (#Shiveluch) eruption. Animation goes from 13 UTC on 10 April to 23:50 UTC on 12 April. Some aspects of the SO2 transport remind me of #Raikoke

This stunning first image was taken at 11:50 UTC on 18 March and shows cloudy conditions over Europe, Africa & the Atlantic 🤩 This level of detail wasn't possible over Europe & Africa from a geostationary orbit before! For more info & imagery visit: bit.ly/3p8UeBh
