An independent thinker in sport. Although the disciplines don't exist, I'm kind of a coaching anthropologist & biopsychosociologist.

If I was 25kg lighter & could produce nearly the double the power I do for an hour, I may be competitive against a GC rider in the TdF! (If I could also ride in a group & go fast downhill).

What do you think of the validity of FTP???? (Ps- I'm covering my ears & not listening as I improved mine by 5 watts on in Zwift tonight. The best in 5-years).

Whilst linear, blocked and polarised models of periodization are useful to encourage us to think about how to train (organise training load) they have limited utility in applied practice. They can make life easier for a coach but are they optimal??? Learning loops are better!

I like TSS as an easily quantifiable metric BUT work has been pretty challenging since Xmas. Form = 16 but feeling of Form = -30! This is the issue when a model reflects an implicit mind-body dualism.

Whilst I've heard that the long-term effects of overtraining on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis can result in hyperthyroidism, I can't find any empirical evidence. Anyone help?

Volunteers bring altruism, passion, and community spirit to sport. But when they're considered part of the coaching workforce, strategic direction must reflect what communities need and value—not just what’s dictated from a top-down plan.

Very excited to be hosting Cluster for Research into Coaching (CRiC) at University of Stirling in the new year. I had an amazing experience at the last conference in Oslo earlier in the year, so it's a privilege to be working with such a great team to do it in 2026.
