Build update! We've finished thatching our late Neolithic roundhouse and have moved on to the walls. We normally don't know much about walling materials, especially from this long ago, but incredibly some of the wall from the original structure actually survived. ⬇️

WOW, this is the earliest known group of chess pieces in the world! 🤩 Dated AD 700s, they were excavated at Afrasiab in Samarkand (present day Uzbekistan). Made up of two foot soldiers, two mounted riders, an elephant with rider, a figure driving two horses and another driving

A rare and wonderful survival from Viking-age York! A delicate silk cap made of plain-woven, undyed silk, c. AD 900. An exotic material in 10th-century Britain, the silk was imported to York from Persia via a vast network of Viking trade routes. Yorkshire Museum 📷 by me

The amazingly funny and ahead of his time Tom Lehrer - a last reminder of my parents’ vinyl comedy collection - has gone. RIP
