Great news that Labour plans to use Citizens' Assemblies - but the 'bypass Whitehall' framing is not useful - our research on climate shows that they can strengthen political decision-making and the work of civil servants, not bypass them.

"This consultation presents planning as a technical delivery mechanism for self-evidently desirable outcomes. But profound political choices are made and implemented through planning.... Who gets a say in these choices is crucial." As is HOW they get a say #deliberativedemocracy

Mañana comienza la Cumbre de la Biodiversidad, la #COP16. Momento ideal para mirar "the big picture" y dejar de ver la crisis climática únicamente como un problema de exceso de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero.

We are on the brink of an irreversible climate disaster. This is a global emergency beyond any doubt. Much of the very fabric of life on Earth is imperiled. We are stepping into a critical and unpredictable new phase of the climate crisis. Read report here doi.org/10.1093/biosci…

What would community-powered development look like? Our grid sets out the limits of the existing planning system that gives communities a narrow window for influence. And what the features of a better system could be - one that fully involves communities in decision-making.

Long, worthwhile thread on new report on where we are and where we need to be in carbon emissions. LT;DR: the gap is large and virtually unchanged from last year. NDCs are not adding up to a pathway in line with 1.5 or 2C

New research-based report on priorities for public engagement on climate policy. Would have been useful and important 2 weeks ago, doubly so now!
