The biggest, stankiest elephant in the room is that software dev cannot be estimated, and yet millions of middle managers spend countless hours “estimating” the inestimable. Why? Why do we not learn? 12

To make this kind of thing even worse… My wife was Christmas shopping once, got a (real but incorrect) fraud alert, stopped by the bank because she was out, but they couldn’t help her in person. It *had* to be done over the phone. No wonder this kind of scam works.

I grew up in St. Louis, MO, where the universal trick-or-treating protocol dictates kids tell a joke before they get candy. My family only found out that wasn’t how it worked everywhere when we moved and asked kids for jokes. It’s way better with the jokes.

The “some developer” part is totally possible, but there are also many teams/companies that try to “move fast” where the developer bringing up an objection to this logic would have it counted against them. Ignoring complexities = moving “fast” = someone else’s problem later.

Replacing my kitchen sink has validated this more than anything in recent memory: literally everything in the world takes longer than it seems like it should.

I replaced my kitchen sink recently and now all of my Youtube/Amazon/Quora/etc recommendations are about plumbing. I wonder how long this will take to wear off.

I’m often a proponent of YAGNI, but man, it sucks when you get a couple years down the line and it turns out that you did, in fact, need it.

Nextdoor took a pretty quick turn from 95% lost dogs and cats to 95% things stolen out of unlocked cars and subposting at neighbors.

Message from the Commander: Patriotism always seems to be a little bit higher around Independence Day. This year, I am asking you to show your patriotism in a different way -- by wearing a mask. (1/4)

I am pleading with Oklahomans to get vaccinated if you are able. Time is of the essence. Almost every patient that is dying and being hospitalized now from COVID is unvaccinated. These are preventable deaths!

Something I'd love to stumble upon is a fleshed out, mature "TypeScript on Rails". The spirit of rails but built from the start taking advantage of the TS type system (and strategically not using it in the right spots).
