.Somerset Council has avoided having to declare effective bankruptcy for another year - but Bill Revans 🔶 has warned the future will be bleak without serious reform: somersetlive.co.uk/news/somerset-… #LDReporter #Somerset #Budget2025 #counciltax

Excellent from Daniel Mumby. 👏 Councils will continue to declare bankruptcy "like confetti" unless we see meaningful reform. The current local government funding model is not fit for purpose, and adding extra bands at the top is merely a short-term fix. somersetlive.co.uk/news/somerset-…?

Two very good questions from Martin Wolf Is the US administration capable of making a deal any sane person or country should trust? Will anybody buy a ‘Mar-a-Lago accord’? ft.com/content/9fa4a7… via @ft

Another scandal that govts of all colours have lacked courage to tackle. Council tax is outdated, regressive, and grossly unfair to those living in poorer regions and in cheaper properties. It needs updating and making proportional to current value thetimes.com/article/642218…

Andrew Dixon (@andrewdixonarc) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Completely agree. It has morphed into a modest service charge for the wealthy but a de facto ‘wealth’ tax on low and middle income households across the rest of the country.

Thank you for highlighting this issue. Councils rely on aggressive bailiff enforcement, pushing struggling families further into hardship while failing to address the real issue—a broken, outdated tax system. Reform is urgently needed. Fairer Share has some ideas.

The problem isn’t just the amount we pay, but who pays and when. Low- and middle-income families face a disproportionate Council Tax burden. Stamp Duty is a barrier for young families moving up the property ladder, stifling mobility and economic growth. express.co.uk/finance/person…

Excellent piece from ⁦David Smith⁩. It is indeed time to ditch stamp duty and council tax for one property tax. Wonderful to see so many economists calling for reform. Thank you David for referencing ⁦Fairer Share⁩. 🙏🏻 thetimes.com/business-money…

Very good from ⁦Maya Wilson Autzen⁩. Will those who have to work in a location distant from their principal home also be exempt from the Council Tax surcharge rate? Or does this discount only apply to our MPs? telegraph.co.uk/money/tax/fury…

Thousands of households have had their #CouncilTax bands slashed - with some saving over £2,500 a year 😳 A big thank you to Callum Mason for featuring us in this important piece in The i Paper. The article highlights just how broken the current Council Tax system is - and why

#CouncilTax heading for £3,000 a year in parts of England by 2030 according to new figures from TaxPayers' Alliance and Telegraph Money - but there's a fairer way. New analysis shows bills could soar nearly 30%, with some areas like #Rutland, #Nottingham & #Dorset hit hardest. Meanwhile,

Widespread use of court action, threats of imprisonment from bailiffs and deductions to benefit money is causing misery for council tax bill payers in financial hardship. 😱 Fairer Share has some ideas to help reform local government finances. inews.co.uk/news/politics/…

👏 Sam Ashworth-Hayes. "Restricted funding and unrestricted entitlements are a toxic combination that mean councils are increasingly constrained in their ability to spend on anything that isn’t a statutory obligation." Fundamental reform is needed. telegraph.co.uk/business/2025/…

Council Tax is long overdue for a rethink. The good news? A better system exists and the public backs it. Now’s the time to push for action. 🔍 Read more about our proposed model and what it means for your area: fairershare.org.uk

Excellent from George Nixon👏 📅Council Tax is based on 1991 property prices 🏚️ Blackpool has higher tax rates than Wandsworth 💷 Stamp Duty increases moving costs It’s time for reform - 83% of homeowners benefit. Fairer Share #CouncilTaxReform thetimes.com/business-money…

Excellent from Neal Hudson. “Proposals to reform property taxation are compelling and could make the housing market more efficient, by combining stamp duty and council tax into a proportional property tax.” ⁦⁩Fairer Share⁩ can help. on.ft.com/4dMFeyB
