You should definitely replace flashcards with extensive reading/listening of material that is easy/previously annotated. Unless cramming a vocab list for an exam, flashcards — their creation, management, and actual use — are very inefficient in language study 👏

I’m starting a new audiobook series in Ancient Greek based on Lucian’s Dialogues of the Courtesans! Fresh, eerily modern, and, unlike most of his dialogues, they do not require deep familiarity with Ancient Greek mythology. Listen to the full episode here: youtu.be/i7dMq1P1EwA

You might know about Atticism and Asianism in Greek, but do you know an extremely similar phenomenon occurred in China as well? In that case, though, it was the “barbaric and Indian” Buddhist style vs. a more simple and elegant, Confucian-infused style of literary expression.

Hide your σάκ(κ)οι because the θῡ́λακοι are coming! If you’re looking to convey the idea of a plastic, or similar, shopping bag in Ancient Greek, look no further than ὁ θῡ́λακος.

I took the liberty to replace the original Chinese indigo (polygonum tinctorium) with the more familiar in the producing blue dye to Ancient Greeks woad (isatis tinctoria). This quote and variations thereof is very frequently used in schools across the East Asian cultural sphere.

Here is a spot-on translation, at least in my opinion, of comprehensible input that I learned from Christophe Rico. We have some similar words that could also be used, but this version I think correctly puts emphasis on the person receiving the input and just works perfectly.

“Many flowers of grasses and trees in the water and on the land are worthy of admiration… but I love only the lotus.” Thus Zhou Dunyi starts his famous essay on the beauty and inviolability of the lotus flower. I wonder what he would have thought of lotus-eaters!

These are my general words for leftists/progressives/socialists/liberals and rightists/conservatives… 😃 I apologize but I had to settle for some nomenclature, so people from different countries and of different political convictions know what I am talking about 😇

Here is an attempt at translating one of my favorite passages from the Analects. The exact nature of the plant in the original Chinese passage is still an object of debate among scholars. I went for the common translation of a cherry tree.
