Here’s my music video of time-lapses of the all sky aurora show on May 10, 2024. It was a superb show, despite some clouds. I shot from home in southern Alberta, latitude 51° N. All the tech details are in the video description on YouTube. Enjoy!

Three views of the aurora over the Rothney Observatory during the May 11 Space Night, with members of the RASC Calgary Centre pointing out sights and running telescopes. The aurora was there but dim in the smoky skies. 'Dehaze' in processing brought it out!

Two images of what I thought were the best, though short-lived, moments of the May 10 aurora show. A tall colourful curtain appeared quickly in the south, then later the zenith exploded for just a minute in a bright corona display. From southern Alberta. Details in the Alt Text.

Views of the great May display of on May 10, 2024, from home in southern Alberta. The show was marked by lots of pinks, purples and blues for the camera. But to the eye I found it remained surprisingly dim and slow moving for a Kp8 display, but with odd features.

A selfie under the stars on a clear night at last at home in Alberta, on May 9/10. The galactic centre and the constellations of Sagittarius and Scorpius shine low in the south for me at latitude 51° N. Tech details in the Alt Text. TWAN

Another demonstration of our crowded sky, in 40 exposures taken over 70 minutes of a field 11° by 7.5° framing Corona Borealis, and stacked to accumulate the satellite trails, not eliminate them. The sky is now a web of satellites. Taken May 3, 2024 from latitude 51° N.

A new eclipse image, a month later. This is a composite of a single image of totality and the eclipse sky over Lac Brome in Québec, blended with telephoto images of the filtered partial phases, placed to be fairly accurate for position and size.

Watch this space! This marks the location of the star, T Coronae Borealis or the Blaze Star, that is expected to brighten to naked eye brilliance this year. Also indicated is the naked eye star, R Coronae Borealis, that sometimes drops in brightness dramatically.

A 180° panorama of the Great Southern Sky, taking in the Milky Way from Scorpius to Orion, through Centaurus, Crux, Carina, Vela and Puppis. Much of this sky can be seen well, or at all, only from southern latitudes. I shot this March 2024 from Australia. Details in the Alt Text.

I'm still working through images shot in March from Australia. Here's a framing of the vast 40°-wide Gum Nebula in the southern Milky Way in Vela and Puppis, with the Large Magellanic Cloud also in frame. Tech details in the Alt Text.

For friends in my area of Alberta, join me May 10 in Strathmore for a public talk at The Vault Cultural Collective. It's free but getting tickets in advance is recommended as seating in the upstairs art gallery space is limited. Hope to see you there!

Here's my blog report, with images and movies, on my Great Canadian Eclipse Chase to see the April 8 total eclipse of the Sun. Was it worth it? Yes! Would I do it again? I'll likely never have the chance!
