While the framers imagined a nation in which “Mahometans” would be part of the religious fabric of society (See Jefferson below), they also limited citizenship to whiteness. Islam and Islamophobia are racialized.

These tropes aren’t just the past, but embedded in our contemporary discourse. Refugees in Europe were cast as sexual threats to European women. See the following Polish magazine cover or more recently an Australian cartoon.

Scholars like Khaled Beydoun note the institutional ways Islamophobia has been codified, like the Supreme Court decisions that denied citizenship to an Arab immigrant on the grounds of "[t]he intense hostility of the people of Moslem faith [toward Christian civilization]"
