Nixon’s admin did a whole presidential report on “campus unrest” in the late 60’s & one of the main recs from it was to create a “student affairs” bureaucracy w/ “intermediaries” who look like/talk like the students to steer their energy back to “legitimate” forms of protest 👀

The bravery of these students cannot be understated. They know the university can revoke their scholarships/financial aid & suspend/expel them at will. They know there are hundreds of police officers itching to assault/arrest them. They’re putting everything on the line.

On applications for schools like Columbia, Pomona, and USC, students are asked to demonstrate their intellectual fortitude, leadership skills, and personal courage. Now, with shameless hypocrisy, these same institutions are punishing their own students for embodying these values.
